Mehfuz Ahmed is the Co-Chair of Conservative Friends of Bangladesh (CFOB) and a long-standing member of the Conservative Party.
He made political history in July 2008 by becoming the first Conservative councillor in 108 years to win a seat in Westminster City Council, securing a remarkable victory over the opposition. In May 2009, Mehfuz was quickly promoted to Deputy Cabinet Member for Children and Young People’s Services. Throughout his career, he has held numerous leadership positions within Conservative Associations and is a passionate campaigner. Mehfuz also served as the election agent for Brent Central in the 2014 local elections, as well as in the General Elections of 2015 and 2017. Additionally, he held the role of Chairman of Brent Conservative Association for several years.
Mehfuz is the founder of Project Shapla, an international social action initiative. Since 2011, he has successfully led CFOB’s International Social Action Projects, organizing trips to Bangladesh with Conservative Party volunteers and Parliamentarians. These projects focus on community development, sports, and youth programs, building awareness and strengthening ties between the Conservative Party and Bangladeshi parliamentarians.
In 2017, under Mehfuz’s leadership, Conservative MPs and party volunteers made their first visit to the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazaar, Bangladesh, as part of Project Shapla. The delegation was the first group of British politicians to visit the camps, accompanied by UNHCR and Bangladeshi government officials. This impactful visit led to a debate in the House of Commons on the crisis, contributing to an increase in international aid and support for both on-the-ground charities and the Bangladeshi government. The MPs and delegates continue to raise awareness about the crisis in Parliament and with the UK government.
Beyond politics, Mehfuz is deeply committed to community service. As the CEO of an older people's charity in Westminster, he has been involved in the voluntary and public sectors for over 25 years. He has served as a trustee for various charities and is a founding trustee of London Tigers. Additionally, Mehfuz has been a parent and local authority governor for multiple educational institutions, spanning primary, secondary, and adult education. His key areas of interest include education, older people's issues, and international development.
